Nereid
will be offering Adult, Youth and Competitive programs in 2008. If you are interested in one of our
programs, please submit a check, Sign Up and Swim Test forms to Nereid as
soon as possible. Space is limited in
each program and acceptance will be determined by the receipt or postmark of
your check, so send in an application as soon as possible. Mail the application to the address on the
form or email a completed form (Microsoft Word document) to
programs@nereidbc.org . The program
start dates are indicated in the description below. Nereid reserves the right to modify the
existing program schedule to meet the interest level. Boris
Roque Alvarez is Nereid’s Head coach.
He will coach and direct other coaches in Nereid’s various 2008
programs. Boris has coached in Cuba,
Russia and Cyprus. He is an excellent
oarsman and coach of all skill levels.

Nereid’s
adult programs are designed to progress a beginner rower from Learn to Row,
to Novice, to Technique improvement sessions to Membership throughout 2008. 1. Nereid will run three “Adult Learn to Row”
programs in 2008. Each program will
cost $300 for 10 sessions. There is a
maximum of 8 rowers per program. These
8 people will be split into two groups of four, with each group participating
in 60-minute session on the water. The
coach will determine when the boat is ready to go on the water, but the first
two sessions are usually spent on land reviewing equipment and
technique. The dates for the programs
are: Adult
Learn to Row 1 - 5/27 through 6/17 Tue, Thur and Sat 5:30-8PM Adult
Learn to Row 2 - 6/25 through 7/18 Wed and Fri (not 7/4) 5:30-8PM, Sun
10:30-1PM Adult
Learn to Row 3 - 8/13 through 9/2 Wed and Fri 5:30-8PM, Sun 10-12:30PM 2. The Adult Novice program is for those who
have finished a Learn to Row program and want to continue rowing. Each program will cost $300 for 10 sessions. There is a maximum of 8 rowers per
program. These 8 people will be split
into two groups of four, with each group participating in a 60-minute session
on the water. The dates for the Adult
Novice programs are: Adult
Novice 1 - 6/24 through 7/15 Tue, Thur and Sat 10:30-1PM Adult
Novice 2 - 7/21 through 8/18 Mon, Wed and Fri 5:30-8PM Adult
Novice 3 - 9/6 through 9/27 Sat and Sun 2:30-4:30PM, Tue (group 1), Thu
(group 2) 6-7PM Adult
Novice 4 - 10/4 through 11/2 Sat and Sun 2:30-3:30PM (maximum of 4 in this
session) 3. The Adult Technique program is for those
who have finished both an Adult Learn to Row and an Adult Novice program and
want to continue to improve. Each
program will cost $320 for 8 sessions.
There is a maximum of 4 rowers per program. These four people will be split into two
groups of 2, with each group participating in 60-minute session on the
water. The dates for the Adult
Technique Improvement programs are: Adult
Technique Improvement 1 - 7/22 through 8/14 Tue and Thur 5:30-8PM Adult
Technique Improvement 2 - 8/18 through 9/15 Mon (not on 9/1) and Wed 5:30-8PM 4. Private lessons. If you would rather take a private lesson,
the rate is $40 per hour. All payments
are to be made to Nereid but times are to be arranged with Boris. Additionally, Boris can work with
Competitive Masters to prepare training programs. |

Nereid’s youth programs are
designed to progress a beginner rower from Learn to Row, to Novice, to one of
our competitive teams. If you are
interested in participating in Competitive Rowing in High School or in a Club
setting these programs are excellent preparation. 1.
Nereid will run seven “Youth Learn to Row” programs in 2008. Each program will cost $350 for 10
sessions. There is a maximum of 8 rowers
per program. These 8 people will be
split into two groups of four, with each group participating in 60-minute
session on the water. The coach will

Junior and Competitive Programs 1. Junior Spring Competitive
Program The Junior Spring program is
intended for those whose High Schools do not have Rowing teams. The program will cost $500. There will be a maximum of 16 rowers in the
program. The 16 rowers will be split
into two groups, with each group participating in 60-minute sessions on the
water. One season of rowing experience
is recommended. Those students with only
a Learn-to-Row course in their background are welcome to attend, but need to
understand that their participation in the program will be at the coaches’
discretion. The focus of the program
is to develop technical skills and prepare for races in the late spring. The dates for the Junior Spring
Program are: 3/29 through 6/8 Sat and Sun
11-1PM and Wed 4-6PM The coaches will finalize any
regattas in late April. 2. Summer Competitive Program The Summer Competitive program is
intended for those who are serious about training. Athletes will train for major regattas in
early August. The program will cost
$700. There will be a maximum of 12
rowers in the program. The 12 rowers
will participate in daily 2-hour training sessions. A minimum of three seasons of rowing
experience is required. Participation
in the program as well as regattas will be at the coaches’ discretion. Phase 1 (school in session) - 6/10
through 6/26 Tue and Thur 4-5:30PM; Sat and Sun 10AM-12PM Phase 2 - 6/30 through 8/1 Mon
through Fri 8-10AM The coaches will finalize the
regatta schedule in late May. 3. Summer one week Technique
Programs The Summer Technique program is
intended for those who are serious about improving on the water
technique. The program will cost
$500. There will be a maximum of 12
rowers in the program. The 12 rowers
will be divided into three groups of 4.
A minimum of two seasons of rowing experience is required. Program 1 - 6/29 through 7/3 Sun
through Thur 10AM-4PM Program 2 - 7/28 through 8/1 Mon
through Fri 10AM-4PM 4. Fall Competitive Programs The Fall programs will be split
into two teams, a Competitive and an Intermediate team. The coaches will combine all the
athletes initially for on-the-water evaluation and erg testing. At the conclusion of the evaluation period,
the coaches will place the students in either the Novice/Intermediate Program
or the Competitive Program. Intermediate Program The Intermediate program is
intended for students with less than 2 years of racing experience. The focus is on developing technical
skills. Nereid’s goal is to
accommodate every able-bodied student.
The coaches will look for students with one or more season of rowing
experience. Those students with only a
Learn-to-Row program in their background are welcome to attend, but need to
understand that their participation in the program will be at the coaches’
discretion. Regattas: Participation in regattas will be
at the discretion of the coaches and will be finalized in August. Fees: $500 Includes entry fee for two Regattas. (An additional entry fee from the athlete
will be needed if participating in more than the two regattas.) Session Times and Dates: There will be 3 on water sessions
per week depending on the number of participants. Estimated start and end dates are
September 2 through October 11. The dates and days of the sessions
will be finalized in August. There
will be a practice on the day before or after a Regatta, but not on a Regatta
day. Competitive Program The Competitive Program is
intended for athletes looking to improve their training for the Fall Head
races One year racing experience is required for the Competitive Junior
Program. The coaches will determine
who will participate in the Competitive Program. The focus is on improving technical skills
and preparing for the races in the fall season. Regattas for the Competitive
program are: First Regatta TBD (late Sept) Head of the Passaic (TBD) Head of the Schuylkill (10/25) * Frostbite Regatta (11/8) *Special Note: The coaches and the students will agree if
they should continue rowing into November.
These students will have the opportunity to compete on the weekend of
11/8 at the Frostbite Regatta in Philadelphia. There is a possibility for some to compete
in the Bill Braxton Regatta on 11/9 in Philadelphia as well. Practice schedules after October 25 will be
developed based on student input, availability and daylight. We will try to have 4 sessions per week. Fee: $700 Includes entry fees for
4 regattas. (Additional Regatta fees from athletes if participating more than
the planned regattas or more than one race per regatta) Session Times and Dates: There will be 4 on water sessions
per week plus one land depending on the number of participants. Estimated start and end dates are
September 3 through October 25.
(Possibly through November 9, depending on agreement with Coach and
Athlete) The dates and days of the sessions
will be finalized in August. There
will be a practice on the day before or after a Regatta, but not on a Regatta
day. |
