Christmas Row, new garage doors, and dock removal

This Saturday, December 15, Nereid will host its annual Christmas Row.  This is the final row of the season.  Eggnog, mulled wine and good cheer will be on offer.  Pot luck brunch items will be appreciated.  Come and join the last row of ’07!  Following the row, we will clean up the area around the house, derig, and store equipment inside the house as much as possible.  Consider volunteering – many hands make light work!

Also, on Tuesday 12/18 new garage doors will be installed in the boathouse.  For that purpose, we will need to temporarily remove the shells and equipment in the rear half of the boathouse closest to the doors, so that the installation crew has space to work.  This will be done on Saturday as well.  Your help will be appreciated.  Thanks to Claire for ordering the new doors.

The docks will be removed from the river by Erik King’s crew using a backhoe, on a date TBD.

Adult Winter Training schedule for Nereid members

As in prior years, we plan to offer Adult Winter training for members, starting January 5.  Boris will coach and the fee is $75 for 12 sessions.  There are 2 session times:

3.  If people are interested in a morning group (starting between 5:30 and

Separately, Boris is available to develop a training program for members.  A separate fee should be arranged with Boris for this.

Please contact Dave Dowd if you are interested: dowdda@comcast.net

Also, please note that 2 weeknight high school erging programs have started:
Mon, Wed and Fri    4:00 - 5:30 PM (Boris with Juniors/Ridgewood)

Ergs will not be available to members at those times.

==================
Logbook and equipment rules reminder

1.  Private and club equipment are not to be altered or adjusted without express consent of the captain or the equipment owner.  Under no circumstances is private equipment to be used without express consent of owner.

2.  Logbook is an official document of the club.  As such, members are required to enter information honestly and factually.

The directors take both these matters very seriously.  Members who disregard these rules may face suspension or termination of membership.

==================
Cold weather rowing

Nereid is concerned about the health and safety of its members and the liability of our organization.  We ask all members to observe the cold weather safety rules:

1. Cold Weather:  Do not row unaccompanied, either by motor launch or other crew boat, in weather of 45 °F or less, or water temperature 45 °F or less. There are clearly visible thermometers on the boathouse (south bay door) and on the dock for submersion in water. This rule shall be subject to the direction of the Captain.

2. Rowing during the dark: Any crew boats rowing in the dark should have proper bow and stern lighting, as prescribed by USRA. In appropriate weather, all boats must have proper bow and stern lighting.

Questions? Please contact Frank Schaefer or George Freimarck.

==================
Winter housekeeping reminder

- Please do not turn off the heat in the boathouse, but set it at 50 F when you are the last to leave the club. This avoids problems with frozen water pipes.
- Keep the garage doors closed as much as possible to keep heat in the house.
- Never open the emergency exit door except in case of an emergency.

Thank you for your help.
