Cold weather rowing
Nereid is concerned about the health and safety of its members, and the
liability of our organization. We ask all members to observe the
cold weather safety rules:
1. Cold Weather: Do not row unaccompanied, either by motor launch
or other crew boat, in weather of 45 °F or less, or water
temperature 45 °F or less. There are clearly visible thermometers
on the boathouse (south bay door) and on the dock for submersion in
water. This rule shall be subject to the direction of the Captain.
2. Rowing during the dark: Any crew boats rowing should have proper bow
and stern lighting, as prescribed by USRA. In appropriate weather, all
boats must have proper bow and stern lighting.
Questions? Please contact Frank Schaefer or George Freimarck.
==================
Winter housekeeping reminder
- Please do not turn off the heat in the boathouse, but set it at 50 F
when you are the last to leave the club. This avoids problems with
frozen water pipes.
- Keep the garage doors closed as much as possible to keep heat in the house.
- Never open the emergency exit door except in case of an emergency.
Thank you for your help.

Adult Winter Training for Nereid members to start soon
As in prior years, we plan to offer Adult Winter training for
members. Boris would coach and the fee would be $75 for 12
sessions. We would like to begin around 1/5, but could start
earlier if there is interest. Here is a summary of the options we
are offering:
1. Sat & Sun 8AM-9AM
2. Sat & Sun 9:30AM-10:30AM
3. If people are interested in a morning group (starting between 5:30 and
6AM) we will arrange that.
Separately, Boris is available to develop a training program for
members. A separate fee would be arranged with Boris for this.
Please contact Dave Dowd if you are interested: dowdda@comcast.net

Rutherford elects new Mayor
>>The people have spoken loud and clear: Out with the Democrats.
Republicans reigned supreme in
the borough, taking every seat that was up for grabs. John Hipp will
replace Bernadette P. McPherson as mayor, and Hipp’s running
mates, Rose Inguanti and John Sasso will join him on the dais,
replacing Councilmen Ray Frazier and Richard Reyes.
Unofficial results put Hipp in
first with 3,708 votes; Inguanti and Sasso each logged 3,683. Frazier
followed with 1,668 votes, McPherson with 1,632, and Reyes with 1,577.
“I think this is a
victory for all of you,” Hipp told his cheering supporters.
“We have a lot of work to do.”
“Taxes and EnCap”
were the deciding issues, Hipp said. His team plans to start working on
the borough’s budget immediately. He thanked the people of
Rutherford and promised, “We will not let you down.”<<

Carnegie Lake Rowing Association Named 2007 USRowing Club of the Year
USRowing has named Carnegie Lake Rowing Association as its 2007 Club of
the Year, the organization announced on October 24. The award will be
presented to the club at the USRowing Annual Awards Reception on
December 7 in Miami, Fla.
Located in Princeton, N.J., Carnegie Lake Rowing Association was
founded in 1985. CLRA is a community rowing association that has access
to Lake Carnegie and Princeton University facilities and equipment by a
special arrangement with the University. More than 200 members strong,
the program operates year-round and includes a Learn-to-Row program,
along with regular tank and lake workouts tailored for rowers of
different levels of ability. Sweep oar rowing comprises the bulk of
club activity, although the membership also includes scullers.
“We are thrilled to earn this recognition, which is a tribute to
our club members, as well as our dedicated club leaders, past and
present, and our club founders, who had the vision of starting a
community-based rowing club in Princeton over 22 years ago,” said
Karen Ellis, President of Carnegie Lake Rowing Association.
Now in its fifth year, USRowing’s Club of the Year Award is based
on a points system focusing on the following criteria: performance,
community outreach, service to rowing, USRowing participation,
technology and communications, and safety. More than 1,000 member
organizations across the country were eligible for the award. Previous
winners include Marin (Calif.) Rowing Association (2006), Oak Ridge
(Tenn.) Rowing Association (2005), Boston’s Community Rowing,
Inc. (2004), San Diego Rowing Club (2003) and Pittsburgh’s Three
Rivers Rowing Association (2002).
