Nereid rowers have great Head of the Charles
Nereids did well at the Charles this year. Frank and Will’s
composite crew came in 3rd in the Men’s Master 8+, Kevin
Wennersten and Abraham Mertens placed 3rd and 4th in the Club Singles
(racing for NYAC), Sean Cefalo was 10th in the Championship 2x (racing
for NYAC), and Nereid’s Women’s Master 8+ crew placed
11th, improving on their result last year. All these rowers will
have guaranteed entries next year. Congratulations!
The complete results are below. From the Women’s 8+ crew:
“I'm sure you've heard
the GREAT news that the CWPRC's WM8+ earned another guaranteed entry at
the HOC, coming in 11th place (out of 31 boats in the event). Our
time of 18:47.3 was just 5.6 seconds (or a mere 3 strokes) out of the
top 10. This put us a full 1:32 faster than last year. We
beat our rival Narragansett by 14 seconds (compared to 0.9 seconds last
year). We feel we had a fantastic race and that Helen steered an
amazing course. The weather was ideal and the crowds reacted very
positively to both our race and our "victory lap" when we wore our
Celtic Warrior Princess hats back to the Riverside dock.
We will be returning next year to the HOC with even more determination to break into the top 10 of our event.”

Charlie Johnston makes the cover of Rowing News
A photo of Charlie rowing his single at the Head of the Housatonic with
gorgeous Fall foliage on the river bank was chosen for the cover of
Rowing News Magazine. We think it’s Charlie’s perfect
rowing technique that made him a natural choice for the magazine cover.
A sample copy of the magazine is available at the website.

Head of the Schuylkill canceled due to weather
In a repeat from last year, the Head of the Schuylkill was again
canceled this year due to stormy weather. The Schuylkill is the
second largest regatta in the country.

U.S. House approves National Park status for Paterson’s Great Falls
“Tuesday, October 23, 2007
A bill to establish the Great
Falls of Paterson as a national park passed the House of
Representatives yesterday in what its sponsor, Rep. William Pascrell
Jr., called a "landmark moment" for Paterson and the state.
The 256-122 vote represents one
hurdle cleared in a push to better showcase the 77-foot-high landmark
along the Passaic River. The national park designation would enable the
Falls to receive federal money, which would boost the $10 million set
aside by the state for initial construction on a plan unveiled last
month.
Pascrell (D-8th Dist.) has
estimated the park, built with state help, would cost $22 million. The
bill would designate about 109 acres of the Paterson Great Falls
Historic District as a new unit of the National Park Service, which
would be charged with operating the park, restoring and preserving
historic structures and creating new exhibits.
A companion bill in the Senate,
co-sponsored by Sens. Frank Lautenberg and Robert Menendez (D-N.J.),
has had one hearing so far by the Energy and Natural Resources
Committee.”
