Good luck to the Women’s Masters 8+
Nereid’s Women's Master's 8+ will be returning to compete at
the Head of the Charles Regatta on Saturday, October 20, 2007 in Event
#22. Their impressive 2006 finish (placing 15th out of 30
boats) earned them a coveted guaranteed entry. We'd like to
introduce you to the individual athletes that comprise this boat.
Cox: Helen Woznack – Helen coxed the Nereid WM8+ to
their guaranteed entry in the 2006 HOC and returns to the line-up this
year. A rower, marathon runner, coach, cox and ex-motorcycle
racer, Helen is currently a member of PRRA and head rowing coach at Don
Bosco Prep.
Stroke: Cornelia (Connie) Kaldewei – Connie stroked
the Nereid WM8+ that earned the guaranteed entry at the 2006 HOC and
2007 will mark Connie’s 2nd trip to the regatta. A
German citizen educated at the University of Tuebingen, Connie is an
economist at the United Nations. She's been rowing for 19
years.
7seat: Leigh Hermey – Leigh is a former Nereid
President and Trustee. This HOC will mark Leigh’s
6th trip to the regatta, having rowed it previously in 1995 (Varsity
8+), 2001 (Champ 4+), 2002 (Ltwt 4+), 2004 (Ltwt 4+) and 2006
(WM8+). Leigh remains in the 7seat in the line-up from last
year. A rower for 14 years beginning at the University of
Delaware, Leigh is also the mother of two young daughters and runs a
small computer programming company known as "Intellectual Solutions".
6seat: Annik Mathews – A British citizen, educated
at Durham University, Annik is new to the Nereid WM8+ line-up at 6seat,
replacing Helen Hastie who moved to Scotland. Rowing for 16
years, this year marks Annik's first trip to the HOC. Annik
is an executive recruiter with Michael Page International.
5seat: Andrea Hurwitz –Andrea began her illustrious
rowing career just 5 years ago at a Nereid LTR class. This
HOC will mark Andrea’s 2nd trip to the regatta and she
returns to the line-up in 5seat as the quintessential "engine
room". A personal trainer, Andrea is also the mother of two
college age children.
4seat: Erin Martin - Erin was recently married to
Nereid’s captain, Frank Schaefer. This HOC will
mark Erin’s 2nd trip to the regatta, returning in
4seat. She began rowing 20 years ago at Stanford
University. Erin was formerly a speechwriter for Senator
Christopher Dodd (D-CT) and is currently in the process of writing a
book.
3seat: Gratia Pelliciotti – The unofficial
"captain" of the Women’s Master’s team, Gratia has
been an active member of Nereid since 1998 and rowing for 32
years. This HOC marks Gratia’s 5th trip
to the regatta, having previously rowed it in 1978 (Mixed 8+), 2001
(Club 4+), 2002 (Club 4+) and 2006 (WM8+). She returns to the
line-up in 3seat. Educated at Barnard College, Gratia is the
mother of two rowing daughters and a real estate agent with Weichert,
Realtors in Upper Montclair, NJ.
2seat: Sheila O’Shea – A Rutherford
native, and Nereid member since 1996, Sheila has been rowing for 21
years. This year marks Sheila’s 3rd trip to compete
at the HOC, having rowed it previously in 2001 (Champ 4+) and 2006
(WM8+). She is returning to the line-up in 2seat.
Educated at Oxford University, Sheila is a lawyer working as an
Assistant District Attorney in the Manhattan DA’s Office,
Appeals Bureau.
Bow: Maureen (Mo) Abbey – Mo, a graduate of Johns
Hopkins University, has been rowing for 15 years. This HOC
will mark Mo’s inaugural trip to the regatta; she is new to
the WM8+ line-up in bow seat, replacing Amy Abbot who moved to
Massachusetts. Mo is an attorney who just passed
the “patent bar” and works for the law firm of Ward
& Olivo.
Sub: Elinor Comlay – At 26, Elinor is the baby of
the Nereid women’s masters program. A British
citizen, born in Portsmouth, England, Elinor is a graduate of Gonville
& Caius College, Cambridge where she learned to row.
As sub and first alternate for the WM8+, Elinor will be attending the
2007 HOC as a spectator and team supporter. Elinor is a
journalist with Institutional Investor.

Head of the Passaic redux
As most of you know, we decided to cancel the Head of the Passaic
Regatta for this year. This was a difficult decision because
we had almost 500 rowers registered from 5 states, promising very
competitive races. However, the amount of debris on the river
in the week before the regatta made it unsafe to run the
race. We could not guarantee safe rowing conditions for the
participants, most of whom were juniors, and wanted to give more than a
day notice.
The Herald News published an article on the cancellation.
Some excerpts:
“This year's problem resulted from a drought and simply a
lack of regular cleaning, said Bob DeVita, program manager for the
River Restoration Program. The waterway is supposed to be cleaned five
days a week, but the smaller of two skimmer vessels -- boats the
commission uses to clean the river and the bay -- tipped over last year
and is being redesigned. The area where the competition was to be held
had not been cleaned since December, DeVita said Friday.
After regatta representatives contacted the commission about two weeks
ago to address the debris problem, it took a week to get the larger
vessel down the Passaic River because the boat had to pass through four
bridges, one of which is seldom used and had to be checked, DeVita said.
About 12 tons of garbage were removed from the water recently, and
workers spent 12-hour days between Tuesday and Thursday using a skimmer
vessel to remove debris from the water's surface. On Friday, a few
bottles, plastic bags and an occasional foam cup bobbed along the
surface.”
The regatta committee returned all entry fees to the
competitors. We are contacting our sponsors as
well. We hope that all will return next year, when the
smaller skimmer will be back in service and the debris problem will be
much reduced.

DiCristo, Maureen Abbey, Al Medioli

Nereid News needs reporters!
The club newsletter is widely read as far as we can tell, but putting
it out each week is a time consuming job. We are looking for
a few volunteers who can commit to producing news items once a week or
once every few weeks for inclusion in the newsletter. Reports
on rowing technique and rigging are welcome, as are stories about the
various forms of wildlife we observe on the river. And
anything else of interest to the readership! Please email
nereidsec@hotmail.com if you are interested. Thank you for
your help.

Grateful Dads hike on October 28
Location: Tallman Mountain State Park, just over the border
near Piermont, NY.
Time: 10:15 AM
This should be a flat hike on a wide trail alternating between
woodlands and tidal marsh near the Hudson River, and we might even get
some fall foliage. We will go as far as little legs want to.
Directions can be found at
http://www.nynjtc.org/trails/record/021205.htm
Thanks and see you there!
