Nereids Victorious
on Harlem, Juniors Come thru Big!
Club Wins New
Concept II ERG!
Nereid won the Concept II Team Efficiency Prize at last Saturday's Head
of the Harlem Regatta, rowed on Manhattan's Harlem River out of the
Peter Jay Sharp Boathouse.
Rowing in their first race of the Fall season under decidedly
challenging conditions (strong headwind, current and motor boat wake)
the Junior Nereid Team took three first places out of the 6 races they
entered. The women’s quad beat New York
R.A. by one second to take first, a close race indeed; the girls 4 with
cox took first as well beating all HS fours plus all 3 collegiate
women’s fours. The men’s four also had a very
convincing win by over 2 min. in time compared to second
place. Rounding out the action for the Youth, the two
men’s doubles took 3rd and 5th respectively and the
women’s 8+ took 3rd.
On the Masters side, Nereid's lone entry, George Freimarck in his
single, also was victorious, giving Nereid the unexpected but totally
welcome Concept II team award, a brand new erg.
Afterward, Coach Will Conceicao said, "Overall a really
successful day. I'm proud of the kids and what they have done
considering its their first race of the season."
Well done, Nereid!

Board of Directors
calls for special membership meeting
The Board of Directors has authorized calling a special meeting of the
members to take place on October 14, 2007 at 7:30 AM at the Boathouse
350 Riverside Avenue, Rutherford, NJ.
The purpose of the meeting will be solely to vote on proposed
amendments to the Certificate of Incorporation in order to comply with
requirements from the IRS in its consideration of Nereid's application
for recognition of exemption under Section 501 (c) 3 of the IRS
code. No other business will be conducted at the meeting
Nereid's revised bylaws specify our corporate purposes that are
consistent with tax exempt status. The bylaws also specify
how Nereid's assets are to be distributed in the event the corporation
is dissolved. IRS has required that these provisions be
included within our Certificate of Incorporation.
The meeting will consider adopting changes which will be distributed in
advance of the meeting. The members can vote at the meeting
and also by proxy. Copies of the proxy statement will be
distributed to all members in advance of the meeting.
Thank you,
George Freimarck
President

A Nereid Wedding
Nereids Erin Martin and Frank Schaefer tied the knot on September 15 in
Thomaston, Connecticut. Early morning rain gave way to a
perfect blue sky by the time of the ceremony and many Nereids were on
hand to witness the event. The happy couple celebrated with
friends and family in nearby Mohawk Mountain lodge.
Frank and Erin met at Nereid and were introduced by Briant
Canha. We wish them many good rows and a very happy life
together.

Register &
volunteer at the Head of the Passaic
This year’s Head of the Passaic Regatta will take place on
Sunday, October 14. It will be the 7th edition of the race.
We are looking forward to a great day of competition and sportsmanship.
* Registration
Registration for the HOPR is now open at RegattaCentral,
http://www.regattacentral.com/. The registration deadline is
October 7. Close to 300 rowers have registered so far with
more expected. Last year the regatta was close to capacity in
many races, so we encourage everyone to register soon. We may
not be able to accept late entries for some races.
* Racing club
boats
Please contact captain Frank Schaefer if you want to row a specific
club boat in the HOPR.
* Volunteering
We will need many volunteers on the day of the regatta.
Please let us know if you are available and if you’re
interested in specific jobs.
More information is available on the regatta website,
http://www.hopr.org/. Questions may be sent to
regatta@hopr.org.

Masters
Women’s 8+ ready for Charles
In 2006, the Nereid Masters Women, under the direction of the
unofficial “women’s captain” Gratia
Pelliciotti, developed a sweep program organized around the 8+ that
successfully competed in the Head of the Passaic and the Head of the
Charles. Their HOC showing was especially impressive,
starting last in the field, but placing 15th out of 30 boats, which
earned them a coveted guaranteed entry for the 2007 regatta.
At this year’s race, they will be returning in event #22 on
Saturday, October 20 at 3:05pm: the Women’s Master
8+ (40+). They will be rowing out of Riverside Boat Club,
located along the banks of the Charles, very near Magazine
Beach. If you’re on the banks of the Charles that
weekend feel free to holler your support from any of the 5 bridges and
the Boston or Cambridge sidelines. Be on the look out for
blue and white striped blades borrowed from Riverside!
As the only Nereid entry racing at this year’s HOC, the
WM8+’s goal is to bring honor and glory to the Nereid name by
placing in the top 10 of their event. This is admittedly
ambitious, as their race is famously stacked with former Olympians and
other master’s ringers. Wish them luck as they
prepare for this awesome challenge!
The WM8+, nicknamed the “Celtic Warrior Princess Rowing
Clan” due the prodigious amount of red hair and Celtic
ancestry among its rowers, boasts a superlative educational, athletic
and professional cumulative resume. Ranging in age from 26 to
51, they have 158 years of rowing between them!!

King’s
Head regatta results
Nereid did well at King’s Head of the Schuylkill, Sept. 30:
Men’s Masters 2x: 2nd place, Jorge Sarabia
& Marc Monplaisir
Men’s Open 1x: 5th place, Marc Monplaisir
Congratulations on your good performance.

Thank
you! Labor Day Street Fair
The Rutherford Street Fair was a success. On display were two
ergs, a racing shell, park plan, and lots of pictures on Nereid past
and present. We had over a dozen people sign up as interested
in the club, and nearly double that it seemed for Rutherford Rowing
Assoc. (youth) program. We even sold over $50 of
merchandise--though mostly to our own rowers!
Special thanks to the following, who made it a great day for
volunteerism at Nereid:

Members:
Marc de Mul, Kate Becher, Bonnie Pugel, Maureen Abbey, Sheila O'Shea,
Ian Hawkins, Gratia Pelliciotti, George Freimarck, Natalie Dowd, Al

Information needed
for Masters rowing article
I am writing an article about masters rowing in the U.S., particularly
looking at reasons why successful college or high school rowers do not
continue to masters level. I would be interested in talking
to anyone who has rowed competitively at college or high school and has
continued rowing with the club as a master to find out why they still
row and how they fit it in with a non-student schedule. I am
also looking to interview people who left the sport after college (or
even high school) – so if you think anyone you used to row
with either in the NY region or elsewhere might have some thoughts, I'd
be keen to hear from them. Similarly, if anyone has any more
general thoughts about masters/club rowing in the U.S., please get in
touch.
