Comments on new bow lights policy
We are considering requiring all members rowing in the dark to carry two
bright white lights on the shell, one on the stern and one on the bow.
This is in compliance with international boating rules. We would also
like to synchronize Nereid's lighting policy with that of PRRA, to avoid
confusion on the water. PRRA requires a blinking white light on the bow
and a steady white light on the stern.
Here's what club members said about this issue:
"should be a requirement for all boats"
"seems reasonable, but would allow the lights to be front and back on your
person as an alternative to attaching them to the boat"
"currently run a flashing red on the bow and a flashing white on the
stern"
"problem is with stern lights. These appear to be designed primarily for
ruddered boats (4s and 8s) where the rudder bar provides a handy clamping
surface. This won't work for the 1X and 2X that dominate Nereid."
We propose the following:
- Bright
rowing lights should be used whenever members row in the dark
- The
lights are preferably white for consistency with PRRA and for compliance
with boating rules
- They
should be attached to the stern and bow of the boat.
There are
solutions for affixing lights to the stern of singles and doubles, e.g.
with a suction cup. Lights can also be attached to a rigger or the
washbox.
More comments are welcome at
nereidpres@hotmail.com. Lights may be purchased from e.g.
http://arcnav.com/,
http://www.bblrc.com/lights/ and other sites.
