Rowing safety reminder
Now that the Passaic River Rowing Association has moved its dock closer to
the Nereid boathouse, we will see PRRA rowers in our part of the river
more often than before. This means that Nereid members may encounter
river traffic even when no one else from Nereid is on the water.
Please take care to observe the river traffic rules - stay on the right
side of the river, don't turn around near bridges, and affix a bright
light to your shell when rowing in the dark. That will make collisions
much less likely and will avoid injuries and equipment damage.
Thank you for your cooperation. Please read also the following message
from PRRA.
==================
Morning rowing on the Passaic
"I am sure you know that Passaic River Rowing Association has moved to a
new location and is now 1.5 miles closer to Nereid. Consequently, the
chances of us overlapping on early morning rows has increased
substantially. In the interest of safety, I wanted to let you know
that our rowers are instructed to use both bow and stern lights
(white)--blinking lights on the bow and fixed lights in the stern--so you
will know which way our boats are moving. Our coaching launch has
red/green lighting in the bow and a solid white light in the stern. A
verbal acknowledgement or warning to an approaching boat is an additional
safety measure that we can all use to avoid unsafe situations from
developing.
We wish you a successful head racing season.
Sincerely,
Jeff Lahm
PRRA"

Update on Fall Rowing Programs
There are two rowing programs that will be conducted this Fall. The first
is a combined Youth/Adult Learn-to-Row comprised of 10 students. They
will meet in two back-to-back sessions from 1pm-3pm and 3pm-5pm on
Saturdays and Sundays, starting this Sunday, September 17. John McKenna
is the Coach of this program. This program will be using at least one of
the Club Empacher quads. The program will have 10 sessions, but will run
through October to accommodate John's Head-racing schedule. If you are
around the boathouse during the times when this session is in progress,
please say hello to all the participants and make them feel at home at
Nereid.
The larger program running this Fall is the Junior Competitive /
Intermediate program, which will be coached by Will Conceicao and Brie
Kvetkus, Head Coach and Assistant Coach, respectively, at Montclair High
School. This program will have approximately 30 athletes, and will meet
on weekday afternoons, and both Saturdays and Sundays. Most of the
activity will be centered at 550 Riverside, however, this program will use
the Giovanni Maria 4+ and one of the Club Empacher doubles, so you will
see the athletes from time-to-time at the boathouse. The Club has an
entry for a Junior Women's 4+ at the Head of the Charles, so that will be
the premiere event for this program. These athletes will also participate
at the Philadelphia Navy Day Regatta, the Head of the Passaic, the Head of
the Schuylkill, the Schuylkill Banks Regatta, and the Philadelphia
Frostbite Regatta.
