Nereid News needs
reporters!
The club newsletter is widely read as far as we can tell, but putting
it out each week is a time consuming job. We are looking for
a
few volunteers who can commit to producing news items once a week or
once every few weeks for inclusion in the newsletter. Reports
on
rowing technique and rigging are welcome, as are stories about the
various forms of wildlife we observe on the river. And
anything
else of interest to the readership! Please email
nereidsec@hotmail.com if you are interested. Thank you for
your
help.

Rowing Terms
Potpourri
Layback
The amount of backward lean of the rower's body at the end of the
finish. Should not be more than 10-15 degrees past vertical.
Loom
The part of the oar between the blade and the handle.
Missing
water
The rower starts the drive before the catch has been completed (or even
started in some cases). This is also referred to as rowing into the
catch.
Oarlock
(or rowlock)
A U-shaped swivel which holds the oar in place. It's mounted at the end
of the rigger and rotates around a metal pin. A gate closes across the
top to keep the oar in.
Outboard
The distance from the face of the collar to the tip of the blade.
To be continued… courtesy of Cincinnati Rowing

Greetings from Nic
in Kansas
I thought the club maybe interested by this. Move to Kansas is complete
and we are living out the hot days of 100 degrees. I have joined the
rowing club of Topeka. We row on lake Shawnee. At least we can swim in
the lake. People are very friendly and I think we are going to be very
happy here. My best regards to everyone.
