President's Message

Fellow members,

Here it is, mid-August.  The summer seems to have flown by in a couple of long, lazy strokes.  The club is gearing up for the fall season.  Much is under way, of which you need to know.  Your Directors have been meeting on a monthly basis since April, even during the summer, and keeping the Nereid flag flying on a number of fronts.  Below the highlights:

Rutherford Crew:
Under the ever persistent Joe DiCristo, member from Rutherford and father of one of the youth rowers, the inaugural program for Rutherford youth (high school age), was a resounding success.  Coached by John McKenna and his assistants, 14 in total graduated from the Novice program, after going thru the Learn to Row session.  We are looking forward to their joining the Nereid Fall Youth Program, which encompasses all our High School rowers.  All the kids are Nereid for the Fall.  Please be especially encouraging to these young athletes.  It's the Nereid way!

Nereid Fall Youth Rowing programs are expected to be bigger and better than ever, with the injection of Rutherford rowers, and increasing participation from the other schools.  Info is now posted on the website.

Masters coaching:
An announcement will be made shortly.  Please stay tuned.

501 (c) (3):
As you know, one of our charges under the changed constitution was to achieve this designation from the IRS.  Although we were always a not for profit, we did not have the status that allows gifts to be tax deductible.  Achieving this is extremely important for our fund raising efforts. All indications are positive that we will receive this shortly.

Bulkhead/Park update:
Nereid's consulting engineering firm, Langan, filed our permit for bulkhead restoration several months ago.  Recent indications from DEP indicate this will be issued shortly.

At the same time, revised estimates for bulkhead restoration indicated an unexpected 3 fold increase in cost.  If so, the financial planning for this project has to be re-addressed.  Indeed, the entire project needs to be re-thought with a view toward economically feasible solution.  To this end, a committee headed by John van Der Tuin has been in discussions with Langan and a number of outside consultants regarding a "soft" solution, i.e., without hard bulkhead sheathing, but considering a variety of other solutions, such as rip-rap ( a stone slope) vegetation, or combinations thereof.  The town of Rutherford has been kept abreast of all this, and we are looking to move forward shortly with a feasible solution.  If necessary, however, we will have a permit from DEP in hand to proceed with hard sheathing or to modify, as necessary.

A significant part of these discussions includes funding from grant giving sources, i.e., ultimately very low cost to Nereid.  Our pending 501(c) (3) status from the IRS will aid immeasurably.

Please enjoy the rest of the summer.  We will see you on the water.

George Freimarck

First Annual Passaic River Mayor’s Cup

Hello All,

On behalf of the Lower Passaic & Saddle River Alliance, in partnership with the City of Paterson, the Passaic Valley Sewerage Commissioners, and the Essex County Department of Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Affairs, I am pleased to announce the 1st Annual Passaic River Mayor’s Cup!  The event will take place on Saturday, September 1, 2007 and will start at Pennington Park in Paterson at 10:00am.  The Mayor’s Cup will mark the kick-off of Paterson’s Annual Great Falls Festival.

The Alliance recently completed the Action Plan for the Lower Passaic Canoe & Kayak Trail (the Trail), a 32-mile trail linking formal access points for canoes and kayaks along the Lower Passaic River between the town of Wayne and the city of Newark.  The purpose of the Mayor’s Cup is to unite the municipal officials and local citizens from the towns along the Trail in a celebration of the Passaic River’s reemergence as a healthy and vibrant community resource.  Participants will also have the exclusive opportunity to hear a keynote address from Paterson Mayor Jose Torres from “Casino Island”, where he will share his vision for this unique location.

The Mayor’s Cup will be comprised of a one-mile paddle from Pennington Park in Paterson to Libby’s Restaurant, located just upstream of the Wayne Avenue bridge. Paddlers will be provided canoes, paddles, and PFD’s.  Each canoe will contain two paddlers.  All participants should arrive at Pennington Park at 8:00am to register and receive their equipment.  Light refreshments will be provided.

The deadline to register is Friday, August 24, 2007.  If you are interested, please contact John van der Tuin (JohnVanDerTuin@bpbmv.com).

I hope to see you all on September 1st!

Tom Pietrykoski

Nereid News needs reporters!

The club newsletter is widely read as far as we can tell, but putting it out each week is a time consuming job.  We are looking for a few volunteers who can commit to producing news items once a week or once every few weeks for inclusion in the newsletter.  Reports on rowing technique and rigging are welcome, as are stories about the various forms of wildlife we observe on the river.  And anything else of interest to the readership!  Please email nereidsec@hotmail.com if you are interested.  Thank you for your help.

Encyclopedia of Rowing Terms

Hull
The exterior part of the shell that sits in the water.

Inboard
The distance from the outside of the collar to the tip of the handle.

Italian rigging
The rigging of an eight so that bow and stroke riggers are on the same side, with the others alternating in pairs.

Jumping the slide
Another problem encountered by a rower when the seat becomes derailed from the track during the rowing cycle.

Keel
Technically, the structural member running the length of the boat at the bottom of the hull. Today, some shells are built without this member so the term often refers to the center line of the shell.
