Head of the Passaic Regatta - September 16
This year's HOPR will be the 6th edition of the race. The regatta
committee is working hard on the race organization, publicity, and finding
sponsors. If you are interested in volunteering before the day of the
race, please email
regatta@hopr.org.
* Registration
Registration for the HOPR is now open at RegattaCentral,
http://www.regattacentral.com/. The registration deadline is September
9, but it helps us tremendously if you register early.
* Sponsorship
We have many sponsorship opportunities for the regatta, starting at
$100 for a 1/4 page advertisement in the regatta program. Contact
regatta@hopr.org for more information.
* Volunteering
We will need many volunteers on the day of the regatta. Watch this
space for more details as the regatta day approaches.
==================
Nereid membership directory
We are going to publish a directory of all current Nereid members.
The directory will include home address, telephone numbers -
home/cell/office, email addresses,years of membership, prior rowing
experience and rowing accomplishments. We are aware that some members
might not want their names listed or some of the information outline above
deleted.
If you want to be excluded from the directory or if you want any of the
information listed above deleted please contact me at
nereidjoin@hotmail.com by Wednesday, August 16.

Volunteers needed for Rutherford's Labor Day Fair
Nereid will have a booth at Rutherford's Labor Day Fair in which we
will be promoting our Club. In the past, it was an opportunity to recruit
new members, and we hope to do this again. If you will be rowing that day
(or, even if you're not) please consider coming by the Fair and help us
man the booth
for about 2 hours. It's on Monday, September 4th from 9AM til 4PM. Please
contact the social co-chairs if you plan to help out, Josie DiLena (JADL153@aol.com)
or Carol Davison (davisoca@umdnj.edu).
Thanks.

From the boathouse
* The officers would like to thank Erik King for spreading a new load
of gravel behind the boathouse. This will extend the life of our dock and
improve safety. Thanks Erik!!
* We need a sturdy new end table for the seating area in the lobby.
Please contact Claire van der Tuin at
clairelesley@aol.com if you have an end table that you are not using
and that you are willing to donate to Nereid. All donations will get an
honorable mention!
* Nereid's air conditioning system has not done very well in the
recent heat wave and is showing its age. The officers have decided to
hold off on boathouse rentals until the fall, because the a/c system is
not able to cool the house, especially when it is full of people.
Significant maintenance is needed, which will not be possible until the
bulkhead construction is well underway. We will make some inexpensive
repairs which may improve the system performance somewhat. Meanwhile,
***please do not turn on the system if you are planning to spend less than
an hour at the boathouse.***
* Several members have come to the boathouse and found it
unlocked. The house should be locked if no one is on the property or on
the water.
- It is very important that every rower sign in and out on the log.
This is the only way of knowing whether there are still rowers on the
water.
- Please close and lock both bays, the front door and the gate if you
are the last person out of the boathouse and the log shows that there are
no rowers on the water.
- The gate should be locked even if there are cars in the parking
lot. Those who leave their cars should be sure to have their gate key
with them when they return to the boathouse.

Coached Adult Open Row Sessions
The Coached Masters program will continue at least through the end of
the summer on Saturdays and Sundays at 9 AM. There is no coaching fee for
these sessions for Nereid members. Interested members are invited to
attend.
==================
Nereid Masters Yahoo group
Nereid members have always organized crews informally by phone, email,
or just meeting up at the boathouse. For new members, it can be hard to
find a crew to row with if you don't know anybody. For all members, if
you have a general question, want to sell equipment, or organize a crew
for a regatta, there has not been an easy way to contact the general
membership.
We believe we have a solution in the form of an online bulletin board that
members can subscribe to. Any member can post messages and board
subscribers can decide whether to receive those messages by email, or just
check the board online every once in a while. Many other rowing clubs
have found Yahoo groups useful for this purpose.
To subscribe to the Nereid Masters Yahoo group, send an email to:
nereidmasters-subscribe@yahoogroups.com
We encourage all members but especially our newest members to sign up for
the group. Hopefully it will become a lively forum for discussion.
Please give feedback on this idea to your president at
nereidpres@hotmail.com. If it proves popular, we may set up a similar
group for the Nereid Junior rowers.
