Philly Youth Day Regatta results
The Philly Youth Day Regatta turned out to be a successful day for the
young Nereids. The team brought home 1 Gold, 1 Silver, and 2 Bronze
medals. The gold medalists in the Men's Junior 16 2x were comprised of two
rowers from the Don Bosco Prep High School, Julian Fernandez and Luis Romo.
The Silver Medalists in the Women's Junior 2- were Christine Trusio from
the Taft School in CT and Aline Franco from Kearny High School. The two
bronze medalists were the Womens Junior 4x and the Womens Junior 4+.
Congratulations to them all! We also had the closest photo finish, with
Kyle Dowd in the Men's Junior Dash, that the Schuykill river has ever
seen. It was an exciting day to say the least.
The Junior Team would like to thank all the Nereids that made this a great
summer of rowing on the Passaic!

News needs reporters!
The club newsletter is widely read as far as we can tell, but putting it
out each week is a time consuming job. We are looking for a few
volunteers who can commit to producing news
items once a week or once every few weeks for inclusion in the
newsletter. Reports on rowing technique and rigging are welcome, as are
stories about the various forms of wildlife we observe on the river. And
anything else of interest to the readership! Please
email us if you are
interested. Thank you for your help.

Dictionary of Rowing Terms
Gate
The small bar that closes the top of the oarlock to prevent the oar from
coming out.
German rigging
The rigging of an eight so that riggers 4 and 5 are on the same side while
the others alternate.
Grip
The rubber or wood part of the oar handle you hold while sculling.
Gunwale (or gunnel, saxboard)
Top section on the sides of a shell which runs along the sides of the
cockpit. The riggers are secured to the gunwale with bolts.
Half Pressure
The application of power in a shell such that the rowers are pulling half
as hard as possible.

Head of the Passaic meeting
The HOPR committee will meet on Thursday, July 26 at the boathouse at 7
PM. If you are interested in helping with the regatta organization, please
attend this meeting. Early signs indicate that this year’s regatta may be
even bigger than last year’s in terms of the number of participating
rowers. Also, this will be the first regatta where we will park some or
most of the boat trailers at the PRRA boathouse, due to space constraints
at Nereid.
All this makes the organization exceedingly complex and we need a lot more
help! Please consider attending the organizational meeting next week.

Housekeeping reminders
Please make sure to sign the logbook before going out to row. This allows
us to monitor equipment use and makes sure that you don’t find a closed
boathouse when you return to the dock.
Guest rowers must sign Nereid liability waivers before rowing. These are
available on the door next to the sign up log.
Also, anyone needing a key to the gate should
contact me.

Rutherford rowing program update
Thanks to everyone at Nereid - Rutherford kids are out on the water. We
successfully have 12 kids who continued on into the Novice program with an
additional 4 participating in July's beginners class. Hopefully all of
them will continue to row and participate in the Nereid Youth Team this
fall. Additionally, off-the water good things are in the works. A youth
group is working towards forming "The Rutherford Rowing Association".
Although based on physical fitness and rowing, the intent is to provide
opportunities for all Rutherford high school age students to learn how to
organize and work as a team towards common goals. It will be an all year
round program based on land training and erging, perhaps some future
weekend trips to Boston for the CRASH B!! Hopefully as more kids join they
too will be able to Learn to Row through Nereid Youth programs.

Saturday morning open row
On Saturday mornings at 8:30 AM, Nereid hosts an open row at the club. We
will put crews together with anyone who shows up. Afterwards, there'll be
breakfast at the boathouse.
