Independence Day Regatta Results
Great participation by Nereid in
the IDR this year, but a lot of 4th
and 5th place finishes. 3 junior crews were among the first 3 in
their race, with the Canha team unbeatable in the Mother/Son double.

Rowing Terms Tutorial
Drive - That part of the rowing cycle when the rower applies power
to the oar (blade is in the water). This is a more (or less) blended
sequence of applying power primarily with al leg drive, the the back and
finally the arms.
Feather - The act of turning the oar blade from a position
perpendicular to the surface of the water to a position parallel to the
water. This is done in conjunction with the finish.
Fin (or Skeg) - The small piece of metal or plastic attached to the
bottom of the boat to help it keep a straight course through the water.
Finish (or Release) - The last part of the stroke where the blade
is removed from the water. A sharp downward (and away) motion of the hand
which serves to remove the oar blade from the water and start the rowing
cycle.
Frontstretcher (or Stretcher) - An adjustable bracket in a shell to
which the rower's feet are secured in some sort of shoe or clog.
Frontstops - The stops at the stern end of the tracks.

family member to join this year.
Abe Mertens - Abe and Kevin Wennersten (who joined a few weeks ago) are
trying out for the US National Team and are rowing both at NYAC and
Nereid. (see housing request

Housing Request
I am looking for short-term housing (two to four months) and wondered if
you might know anyone who would be interested in renting me a room. I
would also be happy to house sit if anyone had a need. If possible, I
would appreciate it if you could send an email to the members inquiring as
to this issue.
As you probably know, I am an attorney from California making a bid to row
for the National Team in 2008. I am training with Kevin Wennersten at
Nereid and also at NYAC. Because of our training schedule I will be going
to bed very early and will also be getting up at around 5 each day. I am
very clean and would be happy to help out taking care of kids or with
chores around the house.

Saturday morning open row
On Saturday mornings at 8:30 AM, Nereid hosts an open row at the club. We
will put crews together with anyone who shows up. Afterwards, there'll be
breakfast at the boathouse.
