Nereid Takes 4th Place in Passaic Paddle Relay
Nereid members Peter Willcox, Nicholas Thorp, and John and Claire Van Der
Tuin, along with friends Jody Weiner and Simon Ross, paddled eight miles
to take 4th place in the 3rd Annual Passaic River Paddle Relay on May 12.
Organized by the Lower Passaic & Saddle River Alliance, the race attracted
more than 100 paddlers from as far as the Bronx and Queens. Perfect
weather, a tail wind and outgoing tide made for a fast race. The winning
time was 1:28:18; Nereid finished at 1:30:38.
The club was thanked repeatedly for use of the boat house and grounds, and
all paddlers were invited back for National Learn to Row Day.
Here’s the
Bergen Record’s story on the event, with some nice quotes from Claire!

Club Receives Donation of Lightweight 1x
Former Nereid member Liz Tabas, now residing in London, has donated her
single to the club! The boat is a 1997 Hudson, maximum weight 160 lbs,
made for 123-135 lbs -- perfect for lightweight rowers. The boat will be
available as soon as we find a spot for it.
Thanks Liz!

Don’t Forget National Learn to Row Day
Saturday, June 9th is National Learn to Row Day. Please come to the club
that morning for a row – we need a good showing to encourage new rowers
and potential members.
In addition, Nereid is sponsoring a Level 1 USRA Coaching Clinic at the
boathouse on June 9-10. The meeting room will be closed to the general
membership on those days. If you wish to take part in the clinic, please
contact Chris Doyle.

NYAC Masters Scullers Invitational
Nereid is invited to defend last year’s fine performance at the NYAC
Masters Scullers Invitational, to be held Sunday, June 10, 9:00 am to
Noon, at the NYAC Boathouse at Travers Island.
The course on Orchard Beach Lagoon is 1000m. Entries will be accepted for
men’s and women’s 1x, men’s and women's 2x, and mixed 2x.
NYAC will host lunch afterwards for rowers and their guests. Saugatuck
Rowing CLub is also invited to compete. To sign up, please email Frank
Schaefer by June 3 with your name, age, races and whether you and your
guest will stay for lunch.

Passaic Polluters Agree to Fund Toxin Study
Seventy-three companies responsible for polluting the Passaic River have
agreed to spend $37 million to investigate how much contamination is
buried in the river bottom along a 17-mile stretch from Clifton and
Garfield to Newark.
Federal regulators said Tuesday that the study of the river from the
Dundee Dam to Newark Bay will gauge what kind of pollutants are in the
river and recommend possible cleanup strategies.
The story is in the
Bergen Record.

Champion Rower Takes Nereid Colors Across the Pond
Joe Medioli, who rows for Harvard’s 1st Heavyweight 8, will be wearing a
bit of Nereid green when his boat competes for the Ladies’ Challenge Plate
at the Royal Henley in July. Joe, a junior national sculling champ who
learned to row on the Passaic River, wears his Nereid visor in every race.
Joe’s boat recently won Eastern Sprints by a convincing margin. Joe is the
son of Nereid member Al Medioli. Cheers for Joe and the Cantab 8!

New Member
Damian Wasserbauer, who rowed collegiately at Xavier University, recently
joined Nereid. Damian is also a member of the Farmington Valley Rowing
Association. Welcome to Nereid!

Club Closed for Private Event May 19
The boathouse will be closed for a private party on May 19 from noon on.

We’ve Been Mugged!
On behalf of Nereid’s many java lovers, sincere thanks to those who
participated in our recent mug drive. The cupboards are now overflowing!

Record Keeping Important
With racing season underway, we want to be in the loop! Please report your
results to us at
nereidsec@hotmail.com.
Also please also be sure to sign in and out, and log your miles after each
row. In addition to the obvious safety issue, your notation helps the club
track boat usage.
