River safety
Last weekend, a serious crash took place between a Nereid 4x and a high
school 8+ in which 2 rowers were injured. This accident occurred under a
bridge, where visibility was limited. Contributing factors were
carelessness on the part of both crews and confusion over the river
traffic rules.
With the high school rowing season at its peak, there is a lot of traffic
on the river, particularly rowing south. The bridges can be treacherous.
Please use caution to avoid accidents and injuries.
From the US Rowing safety bulletin:
http://www.usrowing.org/Safety/USRowingSafetyBulletin/index.aspx
“Right-of way rules have been developed by the USCG. Vessels with the
least maneuverability have the right-of way, but always play it safe and
take action to avoid all other types of boats. The maneuverability rule
can be confusing. For example, a sailboat without wind has the right-of
way, but a sailboat with wind must give right-of way to the shell.”
Do not assume that other boats will yield to you.

Third Annual Passaic River Paddle Relay this Saturday, May 12
Nereid will host the start of the Paddle Relay this Saturday. Organizers
will start setting up tables and tents in the boathouse parking lot early
in the morning. Please park on the street if possible.
Kayaks and canoes will start launching at 7:30 am. The start is at 9 am.
Between 7:30 and 10 am, the launching and landing of rowing shells will
not be possible. After 10, please row north only, to avoid running into
slower paddle craft. Thank you for your cooperation.
Nereid is fielding a canoe for this race. Please encourage our Nereid
paddlers as they attempt arms-only rowing for 3 miles at a time!

Montclair Rowers Win State Championships
At the April 21 Mercer Lake Sprints/ISA Sculling Championships in
Princeton, Montclair High School’s “Mounties” took home two gold, one
silver and three bronze medals. These results placed the Mounties among
the top 44 schools. This event is one of the most competitive races in the
New Jersey spring high school crew season.
Bringing home gold was the girls lightweight four, rowed by seniors Leah
Kaplan, Marie-Christine Razaire and Laura Riker, along with junior Kristin
Goodsell and sophomore coxswain David Garber.
Remaining undefeated for the season in its entry race was the girls novice
quad, rowed by sophomore Maya Friedman and freshmen Meg Heisler, Emily
Klein and Taylor Schlossberg.”
