Opening Day and Open House, Saturday, April 26
It's time to kick off the 2008 and welcome potential new members to our
club! Please come for the Open House on Saturday, April 26, from
9 a.m. to 12 p.m. The club has promoted the event widely in
Essex, Bergen, and Hudson counties, and we anticipate a great
turnout. We need shining member faces to promote Nereid and the
sport of rowing, and to help out with short gig boat rows for people
who come. Waffles and good rowing karma will be your rewards!

Show your speed in the Nerry 500s on 4/26
Fancy a little speed work? Just for fun - 2 at a time, floating
start, side by side 500m prices from Rt3 up to the dock. If you
plan to come down let me know and I'll put together match-ups and
handicaps. Diva has challenged any Men's 2x even-up. I'll
give Mo a length in the 1x (and probably regret it).

Nereid purchases heavyweight 8+
Since last week the boat club is the owner of a (used) heavyweight
Empacher 8+, purchased from Skidmore College. The purchase of the
8+ was made possible by donations to Nereid by members of the
Men’s 8+ crew and by the efforts of Claire Vandertuin in securing
this boat. Many thanks to everyone for your financial support!
Having another 8+ lessens the demand on Nereid’s lightweight 8+,
which was in high demand last year. The Men’s 8+ crew is
raising funds to buy a new cox box as well. Please contact John
Vandertuin or Marc de Mul if you are interested in donating. All
donations to Nereid are tax-deductible.

The new Nereid T-shirts are also available at $15 each. They are
cotton, short-sleeved, with a green oar on a white background on the
front and a crossed oar logo on the back, and look very cool.

Nereid to paddle in
4th Annual Passaic River Paddle Relay, May 10
This year’s Paddle Relay will take place on Saturday, May
10th. The Paddle will follow the same 8-mile course as in
previous years with one exception – the course will be
reversed, with paddlers starting in Riverbank Park in Newark and
finishing at the Nereid Boat Club in Rutherford (paddling with the
tidal current). The course will still be divided into three
legs with teams consisting of six (6) paddlers, with two (2) paddlers
per canoe each leg. There will also be an individual kayak
portion of the race.
Paddlers, friends and family members are invited to the Nereid Boat
Club after the race for the finish line festivities, which will include
the Paddle awards ceremony, live animals from Essex County’s
Turtleback Zoo, food donated by Whole Foods Market, as well as an
exhibit from local children entered in Essex County’s Earth
Day Poster Contest, with the winning poster announced.
The event is open to paddlers of all abilities, although we recommend
that participants have some paddling experience. To
participate on the Nereid Paddle Team, contact John
Vandertuin. We will be paddling against local teams including
a team fielded by the Passaic River Rowing Association.

Towel laundry
instructions and schedule
I have volunteered to launder the club towels used in both the
men’s and ladies’ locker rooms this season. In
doing so, I ask for your cooperation so that I can provide you clean
towels in an efficient manner.
- Since I only row on weekends, I plan to launder the towels once every
two weeks, picking up Saturday morning (after I row, 8/8:30) and return
the towels the next day.
- I will post the pick up dates every month on the doors of the
men’s and women’s locker rooms.
- I don’t know how many club towels there are in both locker
rooms. I would recommend that a few clean towels be kept behind to
cover the time that the used towels are being laundered.
- Guys, please place your towels in the yellow plastic laundry basket,
labeled “Towels”, I left in the locker room last
Saturday. Gals, I’ll be leaving a wicker-type basket in the
entrance way of your locker room this weekend. Each pickup weekend,
could one of you place the basket in the entrance to your locker room.
I trust this should work for everyone. I’m open to
suggestions. Thanks for your cooperation.
