Kearny Crew hosts Passaic River Sprints on April 14
Hello Nereids,
On Saturday April 14, 2007, the Kearny Crew Team will be hosting their
annual Passaic River Sprints at the Kearny Boathouse (finish line). This
is an invitational regatta where all the high school teams from the river
can come together for one day of racing.
Scott Fuchs, Kearny Men's Head Coach, is asking for volunteers for race
day. Many volunteers are needed to help with the efficient operations of
the regatta. We need you and your rowing expertise and we welcome family
and friends as volunteers. To volunteer, please send an email with any
skills that you may have (i.e. launch driver) to
sfuchs@kearnyschools.com and
mckennajoh@gmail.com.
The best viewing points to watch the races will be anywhere from the
Gazebo area in North Arlington to the Kearny Boathouse. Many spectators
stand on the Rutgers Street Bridge in Kearny to watch the races come down
the river and through the bridge. The Kearny crew team also sets up a nice
Picnic area in the park just south of the Kearny Boathouse.
In regards to members rowing out of the Nereid Boathouse that day, we ask
that no rower come south of the Lyndhurst bridge. We are using the area
from the top of the course to the Lyndhurst bridge as a warm-up area. We
thank everyone for their cooperation.
We also thank you for your continuous support with the High Schools Crews
on the River.
All the Best and Go Nereid!!!,
John McKenna

Directors approve new dues and fees schedule and membership requirements
for this year
Everyone should have received a message from club president George
Freimarck announcing the new dues and fees schedule. Unfortunately, we
were forced to raise the dues and fees to balance the club budget for the
year. Simultaneously, we are taking a close look at club expenses and ways
to reduce them.
Volunteering requirement for members. Many other rowing clubs require
their members to volunteer for a few hours each year. Among these are
Riverside BC in Boston and Baltimore Rowing Club. At Nereid it has always
been hard to find volunteers, yet we can significantly reduce some
expenses such as landscaping with volunteer labor. The Directors have
discussed this at length and have decided to implement a 6 hour
volunteering requirement for members. More to follow on volunteering
opportunities where members can fulfill their 6 hours commitment. One way
is to join one of the club committees.
Boat storage agreement. This and last year the club has had a number of
situations where members left boats and oars at the boathouse without
paying storage fees. Nereid has no space to spare, yet we had no good way
to deal with such situations. The new boat storage agreement will set
clear rules for boat storage and for situations in which equipment is
abandoned.
For all these issues, we welcome input and suggestions from members. We
are doing what in our opinion is best for the club.

Need your input in Nereid merchandise survey
We are considering ordering more club merchandise because our current
inventory of T-shirts, mugs, glasses, etc. is running low. But we would
like everyone's input on what to order and need to hear from more Nereid
members! Please take a minute to respond to our survey, accessible here:
http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.asp?u=278543634331
Only 2 questions! We've had a good number of responses so far but would
like to have more. Thank you for your help.

Committee Spotlight: Boats & Equipment
The Boats & Equipment committee works on maintaining and repairing club
boats and oars to make sure all members have equipment to row. The
committee will also offer boat repair and rigging classes. It is headed by
Captain Frank Schaefer. Please contact Frank if you are interested in
joining the committee and/or if you want to learn more about rigging and
boat repair.

Concept2's 7th Annual Global Marathon Challenge starts Monday April 16
In the Concept2 Marathon Challenge you have until midnight April 30 to row
either a marathon (42,195 meters) or a half-marathon (21,097 meters), all
in one workout. When you’re finished you will be able to download a
special certificate to recognize your completion of this challenge.
In 2006, 160 people rowed a full marathon and 532 people rowed a half
marathon! We hope to have more marathons rowed worldwide this year during
this Challenge than ever before!!
Note: You are free to take short breaks as necessary, but be aware that
your Performance Monitor will shut down automatically after several
minutes without either rowing or button-pushing. You can keep it “awake”
by pressing “Change Display” or “Change Units” every minute or so.
Visit
www.concept2.com/us/training/goals/training_marathon.asp for general
advice on marathon preparation.
