Volunteers needed for Passaic River Sprints, April 12
** Please note: no rowing south of Lyndhurst Bridge on Saturday, April 12 **
On Saturday April 12, 2008, the Kearny Crew Team will be hosting its
annual Passaic River Sprints at the Kearny Boathouse (finish line).
This is an invitational regatta where all the high school teams from
the river can come together for one day of racing.
Scott Fuchs, Kearny Men's Head Coach, is asking for volunteers for race
day. Many volunteers are needed to help with the efficient operations
of the regatta. We need you and your rowing expertise and we welcome
family and friends as volunteers. To volunteer, please send an email
with any skills that you may have (i.e. launch driver) to Scott Fuchs
or John McKenna.
The best viewing points to watch the races will be anywhere from the
Gazebo area in North Arlington to the Kearny Boathouse. Many spectators
stand on the Rutgers Street Bridge in Kearny to watch the races come
down the river and through the bridge. The Kearny crew team also sets
up a nice Picnic area in the park just south of the Kearny Boathouse.
In regards to members rowing out of the Nereid Boathouse that day, we
ask that no rower come south of the Lyndhurst bridge. We are using the
area from the top of the course to the Lyndhurst bridge as a warm-up
area. We thank everyone for their cooperation.
We also thank you for your continuous support with the High Schools Crews on the River.
All the Best and Go Nereid!!!,
John McKenna

Nereid Opening Day and Open House
On Saturday April 26, from 9 AM to about 12 PM, Nereid will once again
hold its annual Opening Day and Open House to officially open the
rowing season.
This is a great occasion for current members to start the season (if
they haven't already) and to invite friends who may want to learn more
about rowing. Members and interested others will be able to sign
up for the summer rowing programs, tour the boathouse, meet other
rowers, etc. Please make sure to mark your calendars!
Contact Phil Gartenberg (nereidjoin@hotmail.com) for more information.

Nereid to paddle in 4th Annual Passaic River Paddle Relay, May 10
This year’s Paddle Relay will take place on Saturday, May
10th. The Paddle will follow the same 8-mile course as in
previous years with one exception – the course will be reversed,
with paddlers starting in Riverbank Park in Newark and finishing at the
Nereid Boat Club in Rutherford (paddling with the tidal current).
The course will still be divided into three legs with teams consisting
of six (6) paddlers, with two (2) paddlers per canoe each leg.
There will also be an individual kayak portion of the race.
Paddlers, friends and family members are invited to the Nereid Boat
Club after the race for the finish line festivities, which will include
the Paddle awards ceremony, live animals from Essex County’s
Turtleback Zoo, food donated by Whole Foods Market, as well as an
exhibit from local children entered in Essex County’s Earth Day
Poster Contest, with the winning poster announced.
The event is open to paddlers of all abilities, although we recommend
that participants have some paddling experience. To participate
on the Nereid Paddle Team, contact John Vandertuin. We will be
paddling against local teams including a team fielded by the Passaic
River Rowing Association.

Much interest in Montclair State’s Floatables symposium
On April 4, Montclair State organized a half-day symposium on Tackling
Floatable Trash in the Passaic River, Hackensack River and Newark
Bay. More information is at
http://www.csam.montclair.edu/pri/floatables.
Kirk Barrett of the Passaic River Institute at MSU was prompted to
organize the conference by the cancellation of the Head of the Passaic
last fall. Kirk's wife is a Nereid member. There were 50
– 60 attendees; Nereid was represented by Marc de Mul, Constance
Gill, and Bob Hoguet.
Presentations were made by HydroQual, Inc., US EPA, NJ DEP, PVSC,
Engineers Plus, NJ Sierra Club, NY/NJ Baykeeper, and Passaic River
Coalition (PRC). The prevention discussion focused on storm sewer
regulation, anti littering campaigns, street sweeping, bottle bills,
green roofs, etc. Unfortunately, there was little discussion of
how to prevent illegal dumping or reduce floatables from natural
sources. However, the presentations by the PVSC (Bob DeVita) and
the PRC (Eugene Reynolds) were very relevant to Nereid. The PVSC
operates two skimmer boats which clear trash from the river and is
considering a system of booms to collect trash near bridges.
There is much else that could be done and that Nereid should consider
doing. The number of attendees and organizations they represented
suggests that there is significant interest in the topic. Things
Nereid and its members can do are supporting PVSC's funding request,
the PRC's public information campaign, the Sierra Club and others who
are trying to get a bottle bill passed in Trenton, and efforts to
regulate storm sewer outfalls.
Thanks to Bob Hoguet for the symposium summary.

Towel laundry instructions and schedule
I have volunteered to launder the club towels used in both the
men’s and ladies’ locker rooms this season. In doing so, I
ask for your cooperation so that I can provide you clean towels in an
efficient manner.
- Since I only row on weekends, I plan to launder the towels once every
two weeks, picking up Saturday morning (after I row, 8/8:30) and return
the towels the next day.
- I will post the pick up dates every month on the doors of the men’s and women’s locker rooms.
- I don’t know how many club towels there are in both locker
rooms. I would recommend that a few clean towels be kept behind to
cover the time that the used towels are being laundered.
- Guys, please place your towels in the yellow plastic laundry basket,
labeled “Towels”, I left in the locker room last Saturday.
Gals, I’ll be leaving a wicker-type basket in the entrance way of
your locker room this weekend. Each pickup weekend, could one of you
place the basket in the entrance to your locker room.
I trust this should work for everyone. I’m open to suggestions. Thanks for your cooperation.
Bob Farkas
