Boathouse to be painted fluorescent yellow
The Nereid Board of Directors has decided that the boathouse will be
painted fluorescent yellow starting the week of April 1st. Local
emergency services have experienced on numerous occasions that the
yellow color makes vehicles, workers and facilities much more visible
in emergency situations, increasing safety. Following the
installation of the police radio antenna on the boathouse last fall,
the new painting scheme is the next step in transforming the boathouse
into a preeminent area emergency facility.
The Board picked the new painting scheme with safety foremost in
mind. However, we also anticipate that dock lighting costs will
be significantly reduced, as well as the number of geese on the
property. Whether the more visible boathouse will result in
increased membership remains to be seen. Please stay tuned.
==================
Extended due date for annual membership dues is April 15
Please make sure to submit your dues check or credit card payment form
for the annual membership dues, storage locker fees, and boat storage
charges by April 15.
Nonpayment of dues and fees may lead to loss of membership and storage privileges.

Important notice about Winter Weather Rowing
Nereid's Board of Directors, in the interest of the safety and
wellbeing of the members, and the club, asks all rowers to take note of
following winter weather instructions:
Do not row unaccompanied, either by motor launch or other crew boat, in
weather of 45 °F or less, or water temperature 45 °F or less.
There are clearly visible thermometers on the boathouse (south bay
door) and on the dock for submersion in water. This rule shall be
subject to the direction of the Captain.
The Board reminds rowers that failure to adhere to these instructions
can result in sanctions, up to and including suspension of membership
privileges.

New Nereid T-shirts available
The T-shirts are here and they look great. The shirts are cotton,
short-sleeved, with a green oar on a white background on the front and
a crossed oar logo on the back. Admire and purchase them starting
this weekend at the boathouse! Revenues from the shirt sales will
support the general club budget.
Shirts are available in S, M, L, and XL. The price per shirt is $15.
==================
Nereid Opening Day and Open House
On Saturday April 26, from 9 AM to about 12 PM, Nereid will once again
hold its annual Opening Day and Open House to officially open the
rowing season.
This is a great occasion for current members to start the season (if
they haven't already) and to invite friends who may want to learn more
about rowing. Members and interested others will be able to sign
up for the summer rowing programs, tour the boathouse, meet other
rowers, etc. Please make sure to mark your calendars!

Nereid to paddle in 4th Annual Passaic River Paddle Relay, May 10
This year’s Paddle Relay will take place on Saturday, May
10th. The Paddle will follow the same 8-mile course as in
previous years with one exception – the course will be reversed,
with paddlers starting in Riverbank Park in Newark and finishing at the
Nereid Boat Club in Rutherford (paddling with the tidal current).
The course will still be divided into three legs with teams consisting
of six (6) paddlers, with two (2) paddlers per canoe each leg.
There will also be an individual kayak portion of the race.
Paddlers, friends and family members are invited to the Nereid Boat
Club after the race for the finish line festivities, which will include
the Paddle awards ceremony, live animals from Essex County’s
Turtleback Zoo, food donated by Whole Foods Market, as well as an
exhibit from local children entered in Essex County’s Earth Day
Poster Contest, with the winning poster announced.
The event is open to paddlers of all abilities, although we recommend
that participants have some paddling experience. To participate
on the Nereid Paddle Team, contact John Vandertuin. We will be
paddling against local teams including a team fielded by the Passaic
River Rowing Association.

Safety: Heel Ties -- Who Needs Them?
"When I first rowed in a sweep boat, archeological layers of duct tape
were wrapped round and round the shabby, shredded shoes in the worn-out
sectional eight (more tape than shoe). The frayed string pretended to
be heel ties (when they were on). Now that I know better, I should have
panicked. It was not until my first race (with referees checking heel
ties, pre-launch) that I learned how heel ties kept the rower safe,
when done right."
