Cold weather rowing reminder

Nereid is concerned about the health and safety of its members, and the liability of our organization. Despite the warm days this week, we have not changed the following policies. In order to maintain proper safety, members are asked to observe:

1. No singles rowing until April 1. Appropriate weather conditions permitting for a number of days, the Captain may relax this rule, however not without explicit consent. All HS crews and boats shall be accompanied by a coach in a launch, in hailing distance at all times.

2. Cold Weather: Crew boats (2X, 2-, 4X, etc.) should not row unaccompanied, either by motor launch or other crew boat, in weather of 45 degree F or less, or water temp 45 degree F. or less. There are clearly visible thermometers on the boathouse (south bay door) and on the dock for submersion in water. This rule shall be subject to the express and explicit direction of the Captain.

3. Rowing during the dark: Daylight Savings time comes on March 11. Per the above rule, singles are prohibited from the water. Any crew boats rowing should have proper bow and stern lighting, as prescribed by USRA. In appropriate weather, all boats must have proper bow and stern lighting.

Questions? Please contact Frank Schaefer or George Freimarck.

Nereid's Buildings & Grounds committee

The club is in dire need of volunteers to help with gardening, yard work, basic house maintenance, etc. If you enjoy gardening and repairing stuff around the house, please contact Claire. We have a couple of jobs coming up, including mulch spreading at 550, gardening at 350, and replacing the boat bay garage doors. Nereid needs you!

==================
Nereid to present waterfront park status update to Mayor and Council

The club has been invited to present an update on the waterfront park and bulkhead construction to the Borough. This presentation will take place on Tuesday, March 20. We plan to present the timeline of the permit applications we have filed, as well as a detailed cost breakdown.

According to the timeline, bulkhead and park construction could begin in August. However, this will depend on the results of our permit applications. Other remaining issues are the timing of Green Acres funds and funding provided by the borough to cover the reconstruction of the boat ramp.

PRRA organizes 7th Annual St. Patrick’s Day Erg Race

Nereid has traditionally had a good showing at PRRA’s erg race. This year’s installment will be held on Saturday, March 17 at the Nutley Parks and Rec Center, on 44 Park Avenue in Nutley. The race is 2000m in length and there are men’s and women’s events in various age and weight classes. There’s even a children’s race.

The registration fee is $20 before March 13, $25 after, and it includes a T-shirt. For more details, contact Jen Smyth at 973-284-5665.

==================
Nereid Class to be offered at Montclair Adult School

Nereid is offering a mini-course on rowing through the Montclair Adult School this March. The class, which is entitled "Introduction to Sculling and Rowing," will be taught by George Freimarck on two Monday nights from 7-9pm. The March 19th class will be held at Nereid Boathouse and the March 26 class will take place at the Montclair High School erg room. The cost for the course is $25.

The course listing can be found on page 41 of the School's Spring Catalogue which was designed by Nereid member Suzy Kass! Registration is done through the Montclair Adult School and can be done online at http://www.adultschool.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=1013&courseid=448

If you have friends who have ever wanted to get a taste of what Nereid and sculling is all about, please alert them to this class. While it is geared toward the parents of current Montclair HS rowers, all adults are welcome. They won't do any rowing in the 2 classes, but will get oriented to the Boathouse and rowing technique through erging and videos. This is a great opportunity to expose non-rowers to sculling and provide a preview of Nereid's "Learn To Row" classes.
