We plan to put the docks back into the river on Saturday March 1st,
starting at 8:30 AM. Many volunteers will be needed to help rig
boats and prepare the boathouse for the season. Your help is
appreciated.
When the docks are in, you will be right on time for the Nereid triathlon – see below.

4th Annual Passaic River Paddle Relay, May 10
On behalf of the Lower Passaic & Saddle River Alliance, the Passaic
Valley Sewerage Commissioners, and the Essex County Department of
Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Affairs, I am pleased to announce the
4th Annual Passaic River Paddle Relay! This year’s event
will take place on Saturday, May 10th. The Paddle will follow the
same 8-mile course as previous years with one exception – the
course will be reversed, with paddlers starting in Riverbank Park in
Newark and finishing at the Nereid Boat Club in Rutherford (paddling
with the tidal current). The course will still be divided into
three legs with teams consisting of six (6) paddlers, with two (2)
paddlers per canoe each leg. There will also be an individual
kayak portion of the race.
Paddlers, friends and family members are invited to the Nereid Boat
Club after the race for the finish line festivities, which will include
the Paddle awards ceremony, live animals from Essex County’s
Turtleback Zoo, food donated by Whole Foods Market, as well as an
exhibit from local children entered in Essex County’s Earth Day
Poster Contest, with the winning poster announced.
The event is open to paddlers of all abilities, although we recommend
that participants have some paddling experience. Registration
information will be sent out shortly, but interested paddlers may
contact me now with their anticipated number of teammates and for more
details.
I look forward to seeing you all on May 10th!
Tom Pietrykoski, Chairman
Lower Passaic & Saddle River Alliance

Short-term accommodation needed for German coach
Ridgewood Crew will be coached by a German coach this Spring who is in
dire need of affordable short-term accommodation. If you are able
to help find a short-term rental from March to May, please contact Mark
Babunovic at 201-725-1409 or by e-mail.

Boathouse security and winter housekeeping reminder
We have found the boathouse gate open on weekdays with no one at the
club. Please remember to close to gate if you are the last to
leave the boathouse. Even if there are cars parked in the
lot. Thank you.
Also:
- Please do not turn off the heat in the boathouse, but set it at 50
ºF when you are the last to leave the club. This avoids problems
with frozen water pipes.
- Keep the garage doors closed as much as possible to keep heat in the house.
- Never open the emergency exit door except in case of an emergency.
Thank you for your help.
==================
Winter Training schedule
The adults training sessions are scheduled as follows:
Sat & Sun 8 – 9 AM
Sat & Sun 9:30 – 10:30 AM
Two weeknight high school erging programs also use club facilities:
Mon, Wed and Fri 4:00 - 5:30 PM (Boris with Juniors/Ridgewood)
Mon, Tue and Fri 6:30 - 8:30 PM (Sean and John with Don Bosco)
All ergs are reserved for the training classes at those times.
Please plan your workout schedule at times when ergs are not used by
classes.

Heavyweight single for sale
It is a 2006 Sykes Hwt (90k), M26 (mould 30), HC-carbon boat, with an
alloy wing rigger and is wired for a NK speedcoach. Boat is in
great condition and is stored at Nereid. I can arrange for the
boat to be shown at anytime. Asking $7250 or Best Offer, this
model is sold for $8720 when brand new.
I am only looking to sell this 1x because going forward I will be competing as a lightweight and I am purchasing a new hull.
Thanks,
Sean Cefalo

Vancouver Lake Crew Boathouse Destroyed by Tornado, Help Needed
At 12:24 p.m. on Thursday, January 10, 2008, a tornado touched down
near Vancouver Lake on top of the Vancouver Lake Erg house and rowing
shells. The F1 tornado lifted the club's two buildings off of the
ground and scattered them 300 yards away completely destroying the
contents. All 18 training ergs were destroyed, along with all the
equipment and supplies. Out of the approximately 50 shells stored at
the site, only three survived the falling trees and blowing debris.
Hundreds of thousands of dollars of equipment was destroyed.
Vancouver Lake Crew needs your support to continue the program.
Donations of money, boats, supplies, etc are appreciated. You can
donate online through USRowing. Click on the Donate link on
www.USRowing.org to make a tax-deductible donation. Once on the donate
page, click the button "Vancouver Lake Crew Tornado Relief Fund,"
insert you donation amount and the required information. All money
raised through this button will go to Vancouver Lake Crew's rebuilding
effort.
