Bylaws Q&A session this Saturday

The bylaws review committee (Bob Hoguet, John van der Tuin, Phil Gartenberg) has worked over the winter to develop a new set of bylaws for the club. Nereid needs new bylaws to streamline its governance structure, eliminate obsolete procedures, and become eligible for 501(c)(3) nonprofit status, which allows tax-deductible donations.

We have circulated the new bylaws to the club - everyone should have received a copy. This Saturday, February 10 at 11 AM there will be a meeting at the boathouse where club members can ask questions and suggest changes. The purpose of that meeting is to make sure all members have the opportunity to give input into the new bylaws, so that we will not need much discussion at the AGM.

The Annual General Membership Meeting will take place on Saturday, March 3rd at 12 PM. At the meeting we plan to bring the bylaws revision to a vote. According to the old bylaws, we need 2/3 of the members to vote in favor of the change at the meeting. Therefore, please plan to come to the boathouse to vote that day, even if you can't stay for the whole meeting. Nereid needs you!

Canvasback Ducks: Possible Sighting at boathouse

Last weekend, late morning ergers (and early afternoon keggers) were treated to the sight of group of white backed, dark headed diving ducks, cruising back and forth in front of the boathouse. One of them had a red head or neck.

Speculation was that these were a group of Loons, because they were diving ducks. One of them came up with a small fish in its mouth and was immediately chased by the rest.

Preliminary research indicates they may be Canvasbacks. These ducks breed in the priarie of the Midwest but winter along coastal bays and salt water estuaries. See for instance: http://www.birds.cornell.edu/AllAboutBirds/BirdGuide/Canvasback_dtl.html

Keep an eye out for these ducks. If a real ornithologist amongst us has a better idea, let them opine! Meanwhile, let's hope these guys are comfortable enough with our stretch of the Passaic to hang around.
