Nereid beats PRRA in January Virtual Challenge (by one measure)
Team Nereid posted good results in the Concept2 January Virtual Team
Challenge, which concluded last week. Sean Cefalo placed 108th
out of 3811 participants with 464,630 meters erged, with Marc
Monplaisir also doing well in 319th place with 305,055 meters. Overall,
Team Nereid was 50th out of 227 with 1,737,663 meters total, well
behind the Passaic River Rowing Association in 32nd place, but with a
higher average distance erged per participant.
Thanks to Marc Monplaisir for organizing the team and thanks to all the team members who logged meters for the club.

Emmett O’Connell needs your help!
Bob O’Connell is a Nereid member and rower in the Men’s
Masters 8+. Please consider his request for club member support
on behalf of his newborn son. As a club, we should be able to
easily meet his modest fundraising goal.
On October 19, 2007 our family was blessed with the birth of our first
son, Emmett O'Connell. Just 47 days later, on December 5, 2007, Emmett
was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis (CF). So started our family's
journey to fight this disease and find a cure.
CF is an inherited chronic disease that affects the lungs and digestive
system of about 30,000 children and adults in the United States (70,000
worldwide). In the 1950s, few children with cystic fibrosis lived to
attend elementary school. So a group of parents started the CF
Foundation in 1955 to advance understanding of this little known
disease, to create new treatments and specialized care for their
children, and to find a cure. In 1989, CF Foundation-supported
scientists discovered the defective gene that causes cystic
fibrosis—a monumental breakthrough on the road to a cure. Less
than 20 years later, advances in research and medical treatments have
further enhanced and extended life for children and adults with CF.
However, we continue to lose precious lives to CF every day. That is
unacceptable.
We are grateful this diagnosis was made so early in Emmett's life and
for the opportunity to join the courageous CF parents before us on the
path to finding a cure. So this year we are participating in our first
GREAT STRIDES walk, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation's largest and most
successful national fund-raising event, at the 2008 Lyndhurst -
Riverside County Park walk on April 27, 2008.
Please help us meet our fund-raising goal of $4,700.00 -- a $100 for
every day we were unaware of our destiny to find a cure for CF -- by
sponsoring us. Your generous gift will be used efficiently and
effectively, as nearly 90 cents of every dollar of revenue raised is
available for investment in vital CF programs to support research, care
and education.
Making a donation is easy and secure! Just visit the website below to
make a donation that will be credited to my team. Any amount you can
donate is greatly appreciated. If you wish walk with us on this
leg of our journey, registration is easy through the link on this page.
If you are presented with a "Find A Walker" page, enter my first and
last name and click on "Find Walker." Then click "View Walker" by my
name in the results list to go to "My GREAT STRIDES Home Page."

Together, we can make a difference in the lives of those with CF! Thank
you for supporting the mission of the CF Foundation and GREAT
STRIDES! To learn more about CF and the CF Foundation, visit

Thank you,
Maria + Bob O'Connell

PVSC’s small skimmer repaired
We have received news that the small skimmer vessel, which capsized
over a year ago, is back in operation. The skimmer was also
refitted to make it more stable. This means that the Passaic
Valley Sewerage Commissioners can resume regular cleaning of
Nereid’s stretch of the river. With the skimmer back in
service, the huge floating trash islands that we saw this fall should
be a thing of the past.
Both the large and small skimmer are about 10 years old, making them
susceptible to breakdowns. The PVSC is working on securing
funding to replace both vessels.

Boathouse security and winter housekeeping reminder
We have found the boathouse gate open on weekdays with no one at the
club. Please remember to close to gate if you are the last to
leave the boathouse. Even if there are cars parked in the
lot. Thank you.
Also:
- Please do not turn off the heat in the boathouse, but set it at 50
ºF when you are the last to leave the club. This avoids problems
with frozen water pipes.
- Keep the garage doors closed as much as possible to keep heat in the house.
- Never open the emergency exit door except in case of an emergency.
Thank you for your help.

Winter Training schedule
The adults training sessions are scheduled as follows:
