Junior Rowing

Rowing is an excellent sport for young people looking for both an athletic challenge and a great team experience. Nereid has a year-round juniors program that caters to both first-time and experienced rowers.

Our team of skilled coaches will work with athletes both on and off the water to develop a thorough understanding of the sport. Rowers are immersed in technique, physical training, and race preparation, as well as the basics of maintaining boats and equipment. Rowers in all programs may participate in multiple regattas per season, at the coaches’ discretion.

To enroll in a Nereid program, download and complete the forms on this page; then mail the application to the address on the form with a check. A swim test is also required for all seasons but Winter; please the sidebar on the right side of this page for a link with more information on the swim test. Completed forms may also be emailed to programs@nereidbc.org. Space is limited and is not confirmed until a check is received. Receipt of completed forms and check will determine acceptance.

Nereid reserves the right to modify the program schedule as circumstances change. Should an athlete drop out of a program, no refund will be provided. See the links on the right hand side of this page to view the schedule.

Summer Program

The 2017 Junior Summer season will begin on June 12th and run until August 5th*. Rowers may sign up for a full summer membership or a half summer membership**. A half summer membership allows rowers to train with the team for up to four weeks of the summer, while the full summer membership allows rowers to train up to eight weeks. Rowers can choose their weeks and must tell the coaches which weeks of the summer they plan on participating by the start of the season.

  • High School 6-day: This program is open to rowers with at least one season of prior rowing experience and meets Mondays – Saturdays. Practice will be from 4 – 6 PM Monday – Friday, and 11 AM – 1 PM on Saturday.
  • High School 4-day: This program is open to both experienced and novice rowers. Practice times will be the same as the HS 6-day program, and rowers may choose which four days of the week they will attend. Rowers must tell the coaches which four days they have chosen by the start of the season. Rowers may move up to the 6-day program later in the season should they choose to do so and if the coaches approve. Additional fees may apply in this case.
  • Middle School 4-day: This program is open to both experienced and novice rowers and meets Mondays – Thursdays. Practice will be from 6 – 8 PM.
  • Middle School 2-day: This program is open to novice and experienced rowers. Practice times will be the same as the MS 4-day program, and rowers may choose which two days of the week they will attend. Rowers must tell the coaches which two days they have chosen by the start of the season. Rowers may move up to the 4-day program later in the season should they choose to do so. Additional fees may apply in this case.

The goals of the summer programs are two-fold: to develop the athletes technically and physically, and to prepare the athletes to race. Rowers will have multiple opportunities to race over the summer at the coaches' approval, however, racing is not required for participation in any program. Potential regattas include: USRowing Club Nationals, The Royal Canadian Henley Regatta, The Schuylkill Navy Regatta, The Independence Day Regatta, The Philadelphia Youth Regatta, and Overpeck Sumer Sprints.

Any athlete who chooses to race at either the USRowing Club Nationals or the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta will not be allowed to miss more than one week's worth of practices. However, rowers who will be away for more than one week will still be eligible to participate in every other regatta, so long as the coaches approve. For further questions please contact Dylan Gould at headcoach@nereidbc.org.

*The summer season will end on August 13th for any rowers participating in Canadian Henley.

**Rutherford Residents receive a 50% discount until participation reaches 25% of the program size, after which the discount is pro-rated across all Rutherford participants. We ask all participants to pay the full program amount, and then we will issue a refund to Rutherford Residents once the final numbers are known. At current participation levels we expect that refund level to be around 40%.

Spring Program

The 2017 Junior Spring season will begin on March 1st and run until June 3rd*.

  • High School 6-day: This program is open to rowers with at least one season of prior rowing experience and meets Mondays – Saturdays. Practice will be from 4 – 6 PM Monday – Friday, and 11 AM – 1 PM on Saturday.
  • High School 4-day: This program is open to both experienced and novice rowers and meets Tuesdays – Thursdays and Saturdays. Practice will be from 4 – 6 PM Tuesday – Thursday, and 11 AM – 1 PM on Saturday. Rowers may move up to the 6-day program later in the season should they choose to do so and if the coaches approve. Additional fees may apply in this case.
  • Middle School 4-day: This program is open to both experienced and novice rowers and meets Tuesdays – Thursdays and Saturdays. Practice will be from 5:30 – 7:30 PM Tuesday – Thursday, and 1 – 3 PM on Saturday
  • Middle School 2-day: This program is open to novice and experienced rowers and meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30 - 7:30 PM. Rowers may move up to the 4-day program later in the season should they choose to do so and if the coaches approve. Additional fees may apply in this case

All of Nereid’s Junior programs are competive programs with opportunities to race throughout the season. As such, a certain level of commitment is expected from each athlete. Specific expectations will be discussed at the start of the season. Similarly, there will be a parents meeting on Saturday, March 4th (11 AM for High School parents and 1 PM for Middle School parents) where expectations and logistics for the rest of the season will be discussed. For further questions please contact Dylan Gould at headcoach@nereidbc.org.

*Any rowers who qualify for Youth Nationals will be required to pactice until the completion of Youth Nationals, June 11th.
