Junior Rowing

Rowing is an excellent sport for young people looking for both an athletic challenge and a great team experience. Nereid has a year-round juniors program that caters to both first-time and experienced rowers.

Our team of skilled coaches will work with athletes both on and off the water to develop a thorough understanding of the sport. Rowers are immersed in technique, physical training, and race preparation, as well as the basics of maintaining boats and equipment. Rowers in all programs may participate in multiple regattas per season, at the coaches’ discretion.

To enroll in a Nereid program, use the online checkout tool down below. A swim test is also required for all seasons but Winter; please see the sidebar on the right side of this page for a link with more information on the swim test. Completed forms may also be emailed to programs@nereidbc.org

Space is limited and is not confirmed until a payment is received. Acceptance is also not guaranteed and is determined based on seniority, as well as on a first come, first served basis. Nereid reserves the right to modify the program schedule as circumstances change. Should an athlete drop out of a program, no refund will be provided.

Winter Program

The 2018 Junior Winter season will begin the week of November 26th and run until the last weekend of February.

  • High School*: This program is open to rowers with at least one season of prior rowing experience and meets Tuesday – Thursdays, plus Saturdays. On Wednesdays and Thursdays practice will split into two different sessions. The first practice session will be from 4 - 5:30 PM and will be for the top 12 rowers on the team, and the second session will be from 5:30 - 7 PM and will be for the remaining rowers on the team. On Tuesdays and Saturdays the team will practice together as a whole. Practice will be from 4 – 6 PM Tuesdays, and 11:30 AM – 1:30 PM on Saturdays. Optional practices will be held on Mondays and Fridays from 4 - 5:30 PM.
  • Middle School: This program is open to both experienced and novice rowers and meets Mondays and Fridays from 5:30 – 7:00 PM. The goals of this program are to prepare rowers physically and technically for the spring season.

All of Nereid’s Junior programs are competive programs with opportunities to race throughout the season. As such, a certain level of commitment is expected from each athlete. Specific expectations will be discussed at the start of the season. For further questions please contact Dylan Gould at headcoach@nereidbc.org.

*Select High School rowers will have the opportunity to train at FASST (http://www.fasstnj.com/) once a week. These rowers will also have the option of training at FASST a second day of the week for an additional $150. We have 20 spots for training at FASST and those spots will be determined by seniority as well as level of competitiveness. Training at FASST will be on Tuesdays from 6 - 7 PM and Saturdays from 10 - 11 AM.

**Rutherford Residents receive a 50% discount until participation reaches 25% of the program size, after which the discount is pro-rated across all Rutherford participants. We ask all participants to pay the full program amount, and then we will issue a refund to Rutherford Residents once the final numbers are known. At current participation levels we expect that refund level to be around 40%.
