Junior Rowing

Rowing is an excellent sport for young people looking for both an athletic challenge and a great team experience. Nereid has a year-round juniors program that caters to both first-time and experienced rowers.

Our team of skilled coaches will work with athletes both on and off the water to develop a thorough understanding of the sport. Rowers are immersed in technique, physical training, and race preparation, as well as the basics of maintaining boats and equipment. Rowers in all programs may participate in multiple regattas per season, at the coaches’ discretion.

To enroll in a Nereid program, use the online checkout tool down below. A swim test is also required for all seasons but Winter; please see the sidebar on the right side of this page for a link with more information on the swim test. Completed forms may also be emailed to

Space is limited and is not confirmed until a payment is received. Acceptance is also not guaranteed and is determined based on seniority, as well as on a first come, first served basis. Nereid reserves the right to modify the program schedule as circumstances change. Should an athlete drop out of a program, no refund will be provided.

Spring Programs

The 2019 Junior Spring season will begin on February 28th for the high school programs and March 5th for the middle school programs. The spring season will end just before Memorial Day weekend, except for high school rowers who are competing at Youth Nationals.

  • High School 6-day*: This program is open to rowers with at least one season of prior rowing experience. Practice will be from 4 – 6 PM Mondays - Fridays, and 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM on Saturdays.
  • High School 4-day*: This program is open to both experienced and novice rowers and meets Tuesday – Thursdays, plus Saturdays. Practice times are 4 – 6 PM Tuesdays - Thursdays, and 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM on Saturdays.
  • Middle School: This program is open to both experienced and novice rowers and meets Tuesday, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 6 – 7:30 PM. The goal of this program is to teach rowers proper technique while also physically preparing experienced rowers for racing.

All of Nereid’s Junior programs are competive programs with opportunities to race throughout the season. As such, a certain level of commitment is expected from each athlete. Specific expectations will be discussed at the start of the season. For further questions please contact Dylan Gould at

*Select High School rowers will have the opportunity to train at FASST ( once a week. We have 20 spots for training at FASST and those spots will be determined by seniority as well as level of competitiveness. Training at FASST will be on Tuesdays from 6 - 7 PM.

**Rutherford Residents receive a 50% discount until participation reaches 25% of the program size, after which the discount is pro-rated across all Rutherford participants. We ask all participants to pay the full program amount, and then we will issue a refund to Rutherford Residents once the final numbers are known. At current participation levels we expect that refund level to be 50%.
